Thanks for writing Sue.

You have many options for wine in Israel. And yes, most of them come at prices that are less than those found Stateside.

Supermarkets sell a lot of bulk wine. Wines like the Carmel Selected - the top selling wine in the country.

Then there are fine wine shops such as "Derech HaYayin" that specialize in better wines and have branches in several major cities.

Finally you can go to the SHUK (AKA Mahane Yehuda) in Jerusalem where there are several wine stores where you can find the better wines prices aggressively, but without much guarantee of proper storage.

Good luck & have fun!

Hi WTG,

I see that this blog is about a year old now?--thus, if you were going to buy some Israeli wine now (10/2009), which ones would you recommend as prices definitely seem to have gone up! For the Segal Unfiltered, I see 2004 and 2005--which one is better? Would you pay $100 for the Margalit 2006 Cab Special Reserve? Any idea if it's worth it? I tried the Barkan Altitude 624 last week in Jerusalem and it was awesome, but what about the Barkan Superieur Cab--is it worth ~$60? Thanks if you can provide any help!

Help! Can you tell us where to order some of this wine? We are a non-profit organization: Portland-Ashkelon Sister City Ass and we want to have a wine tasting event to raise money the first part of March 2010. How do we order this wine? Through who?

Just discovered you when deciding whether the 2004 Castel GV was ready for Rosh Hashanna or whether I should leave it another year and go for the Petit Castel 2006.

I agree with you about the Bustan. I bought some back from Israel to the UK and I thought it was terrific - preferred the Merlot to the Cab which was slightly unexpected. Also liked the Jonathan range from Tishbi.

Our options are more limited than yours in the US, but I must say that I think the Mt Hermon red from Yarden is a good buy. It tastes decently claret like and is reasonably priced and, having served it at 3 smachot it has pleased the multitudes.

Good site - most enjoyable.
